Vienna Scientific Cluster

The Vienna Scientific Cluster (VSC) is a prominent collaborative project among leading Austrian universities (such as TU Wien, University of Vienna, and BOKU), providing high-performance computing (HPC) resources for cutting-edge scientific research. EMKO contributed to this demanding environment by supplying specialized components essential for the stable operation and efficient organization of the data center infrastructure.

Technical Solution

For the VSC-4 and VSC-5 installations, custom-tailored EMKO components were utilized. Given the extreme cooling requirements (a mix of direct hot water cooling and air circulation) and the high-density hardware configuration, all supplied parts had to meet rigorous standards for mechanical durability and thermal management.

VSC-4: Austria's first supercomputer to break the petaflop barrier (delivering 2.7 PFlops).
VSC-5: The latest expansion with over 4 PFlops of performance, featuring AMD EPYC processors and advanced liquid cooling technology.

Key Benefits

EMKO’s solutions enabled the optimization of the server room layout, contributing to the high energy efficiency (PUE) that is critical for large-scale HPC projects. Our components provide a reliable foundation for scientists working in fields such as quantum physics, meteorology, and bioinformatics, allowing them to perform complex simulations in a secure and stable environment.
